Summer: Bas Jan Ader’s I’m Too Sad To Tell You, is uncanny and near comic in its display of extreme emotion. In 1971, too choked up to describe his sorrow, Ader’s performance became a parody of modernist ideals. Today it seems to operate differently for the viewer as it alludes to a certain conscious loss of affect.
