"love and money" .... have trended a long time.
that being said, there are long-lasting trends ... in the US, "home ownership" has trended for a couple hundred years ... in the western world, Abrahamic religions have trended for a few thousand years, with ups and downs and variations .... agriculture has trended for a loooong time
spoken language has trended for quite a while ... "marriage" has trended for probably almost as long.
tough to say, depending on what the "something" is

- usually until everyone gets sick of the style. whether the stores are selling way to much of it or stores don't even bother to sell it anymore. This can go on for about 10 years. Like the 80's was all about big hair and tight pants. This only lasted for 10 years. Usually one of the famous stars on t.v. will start something else and everyone will go along with it.
