Quiet, studious, and fascinated by pop culture, Jakob moved to Chicago in 2000 to get a Master's degree in American Studies. While in the program, he met Fletcher, who introduced him to Freya. As Book Four opens, the two of them have just moved in together.

Freya's now the manager of Tympanum, a record shop in the Lakeview area of Chicago, and she's turned her back on her rough past in favor of a calmer future, represented by her relationship with the bookish Jakob. But as her turbulent former life settles into something like comfort, she finds herself feeling increasingly uncomfortable—a world without chaos sometimes seems like a pale imitation of a real world that she once knew.

JANINE

A self-described "pervert," Janine's background in gender theory led her to adopt the practices of bisexuality and nonmonogamy. She left academia to work in graphic design in the late 1990s, and is presently a studio manager at a media group.

LYDIA

Lydia spent her adolescence in the Detroit rave culture, but circumstances led her to attend college in Bloomington, Indiana, where she met two geeks, Marvin and Paul, with whom she would later move to Chicago. In 2003 she moved out to live on her own.

CLARK

Aesthetically and politically radical, Clark got her MFA in Poetry at the same time as Fletcher, but she chose not to go on for her Ph.D. At the opening of Book Four she works as an assistant editor at a publishing company.
