Depends on how you are going to make it. If you have you are going to use it in a plunger it can be coarse, if you have your own coffee machine - it needs to be fine, and if you are doing an "instant" style of coffee - needs to be very fine

Well you would need a coffee grinder, or if you bought the coffee at a place like Trader Joe's they have a coffee grinder there that you could use.

If you don't have a coffee grinder, you can put the coffee in a small cloth bag and smash it with a hammer (seriously).

You should grind it in a coffee grinder or a blender that has a coffee grinding option. Depending where you buy your whole bean coffee they might grind it for you to take home... ex.. Starbucks...

If you are in india you will have instant coffee powder shops who will be having an option of grinding our coffee bean for money. But we can also ask them to mix chichory (minimal % for flavour) .In chennai we have shops where they sell leo coffee powder .There they will grind the coffee beans.

If you want the best tasting coffee, don't skimp on the grinder. If you buy the chinese junk sold in places like wally world your coffee will reflect it.
Buy a good quality grinder that has a good set of burr grinders. The best deal I have seen so far is a Baratza Maestro at around $100.00 US. The little whirley blades make nice trotline weights.
But if you are going to go to the expense of getting good cofee beans get a good grinder too.
