My water pitchers and kettles always get a little shot of WHITE vinegar diluted 1part vinegar 2part distilled water.
I do it about once a month. I NEVER use dish soap or other detergents I always feel it compromises the purity of the container.
I also run that mix through my coffee maker every once in a while.

You need to clean the dirt out of them just as any other kitchen utensil. - yea...not for bacterial reasons...but to reduce scale and other deposits that build up after many uses...
- Yes, even though you just boil water in them they can get a lime buildup because of the chemicals in the water. Also your kettle is not invulnerable to different insects. Ants are small enough to crawl into a kettle. Do you reallly want to drink water that is infected by all the nasty little germs that are on bugs. It is like eating bugs.
- The best way to clean the inside of your kettle is to pour 1 inch of vinegar into it then add 2 inches of water then boil it for 10 minutes. Be careful because it will foam up but it will clean your kettle like new.
