So pupsintrouble and I were talking about a nastynets sponsored ytmnd throw down…
then I made this page as a test to see if we could have one repository for all of our accounts and then I made this picture
and I was laughing the whole time.
Do you want to try something like the Contagious Media Showdown but only on ytmnd?

sounds good to me. prizes? nasty nets members only or open to the public?
p.s. my body’s central nervous system crashed when i loaded your ytmnd frames page…

what do you think? nastynets only would be easier to keep track of….but maybe not as fun, how would we deal with other people? just tagging w/nastynets? and some sort of time frame/limit?
I could offer a big epson print of any image the winner wanted as the prize….unless I won….

it would be neat if other people outside of nasty nets members competed. i just don’t know how many entries we would get from non-members :)
also, common theme? common materials to remix?
- jmb — 11/9/06 @ 1:16 pm
I agree, outsiders from nastynets would make it much more interesting…
We could treat it just like contagious media did, do a press release, make a site, write scholarly papers about ytmnd and try to get bigger sponsorship for prizes. Between all of us and our blogs/jobs etc we should be able to get some major attention to attract outsider participants..
ytmnd.nastynets.com with movable type to register users…
its like a contest inside a contest, a mashup contest mashup
I don’t like a common theme or media pool, use whatever you want and let darwin pick the winner..

some more thoughts…
competitive media showdown
we could sponsor the same type of thing on youtube, or any number of web2.0 type places…
I love the fact that we would be sponsoring a competition in an already competitive environment, and that we are using that site as a resource, yet not letting that site participate in the dialogue…

yeah, these are great ideas! i think the ytmnd competition should be open to all and tagged nastynets… do we have a way to pull those into the NN site? no one’s announced NN to Rhizome, really, and I hesitate to do so bc I’m on NN and can’t/don’t want to do self-promo at Rhiz…. Something should go out, and this competition would be a nice context. We could reblog it up, etc…

whoa im super down for this (and i like that multi-ytmnd page hah). im still a tad wierded out by artists/me making ytmnds, cuz they never seem to fit into the vernacular. but of course thats not the point here.. maybe it just needs a certain slant? should the competition be won by whoever gets the best rating on ytmnd (a mix of ytmnd peeps and nasty netters)? maybe it could be an ongoing struggle that doesnt end until one of us makes the next superstar ytmnd
re: themes or source pools…im certain we’ll end up riffing on eachothers (i.e. taking sounds or one-upping eachother..), which will be fun :-)
maybe we could make a nice little entry form (just insert your url & name)

Sweet,
I cant find any rss stuff from ytmnd user pages, which is a bummer as that would be an easy way to track people.. I will keep thinking about this.
Time frame: I think rather than it just being open ended, we build up the contest, get a ton of people involved and set a short period of time to complete your pages. In my mind it’s like one of those hacker conventions where we all intensively work on this idea of ytmnd. maybe like 2 weeks of making? then 2 weeks to track and name a winner? It would be awesome if we(nn members) could all be in the same room for a weekend making ytmnds, just a thought…
guth, i think the idea of this came out of my weird feelings about ytmnds too. It’s like I have an alter ego when i log into that site….

nastynets YTMND LAN party, y’all!
- guthrie — 11/11/06 @ 12:42 pm
Duh I just remembered — JMB and I had been talking about some kind of Surfing Triathalon or something like that — we had ideas for events like typing competitions (who can get the highest Words Per Minute) and 24 hour del.icio.us lock in, 24 hour surfing marathon, something like that… too much? might be fun to have an intense 2 week surfing competition
- guthrie — 11/11/06 @ 2:08 pm
the nastynets colloquiathon or the nastynets gregarithon
just trying to think of antonyms of nasty and turn it into a “thon”
we should figure out the center of mass for all the users on NN and get a hotel room for a weekend and just go nuts..
