MS Paint secrets revealed

OK, there are lots of keyboard shortcuts for hidden features in MS Paint. Here are three that blew me away the most… I felt like I was playing Mortal Kombat with a Game Genie… hidden features in PAINT???

For the first one in the image below, aka trail mode, paste something in Paint, then hold Shift while dragging it around. You can create your own brushes this way!

For the second one, press Ctrl plus + or – on the 10-key number pad while using the paintbrush, spray paint, line tool, box tool, circle tool, etc. Finally, you aren’t limited to the brush sizes!

For the third one, while you are drawing with the pencil or paintbrush, roll the scrollwheel on your mouse if you have one to make your drawing 3-D… kind of. I wonder if you can draw in Paint just using the keyboard, but that’s another post…

Another trick from that page you sent me:

If you have an image selected you can press Ctrl+Plus(Numpad) to make it larger or Ctrl+Minus(Numpad) to make it smaller, and it stays proportional.

If you didn’t know that (which I didn’t, for the last 10 years) you have to type in both the horizontal and vertical resizing percentages in a dialogue–ridiculous!

Question–on that 3D drawing feature, what determines the direction of the vanishing point that’s creating those 3D rays? In your example the angle is upwards towards the upper right corner of the screen, on my computer the angle is downwards to the lower right.

Joel: The original creator of Kid Pix has created a new(ish) program for OSX thats pretty fun to mess around with. it’s called Beautiful Dorena. Also, Pixen is an app for pixel artists and game designers that feels a bit like Paint.

http://jeweledplatypus.org/britta/photoshop1.0.zip is basically paint. :)

needs the classic environment to run, of course.

there is a robust “binary bit-on bit-off” “black-white inverse” and so on program for MacOSX aptly titled bitmap that is installed with the X11 package. Not a paint program but really neat.
