This post did not just strike a chord with me, but a whole symphony.

- lektrogirl — 12/27/09 @ 4:00 am

please do another version with the videos set to autoplay.

- lektrogirl — 12/27/09 @ 4:02 am

Please, no autoplay.
This is great, but still trying to decide if it’s something peculiar to Law & Order or just a possible subset of the incredibly huge number of dumb things people post to YouTube that just happens to include (a) dogs and (b) this TV show.
If it’s something peculiar to Law & Order, two theories:
1. The show comes on at canine dinnertime
2. That wah-wah guitar sounds like barking.

excellent collection. I would like to see you sync the theme song and let the dogs add to it.
tom: it might be something in the audio frequencies of the theme, somewhere in the range of 18–22 kHz.

psisto,
here is a conversation I’ve been having by email with a friend who walks dogs professionally:

O: Hey. Sorry it took so long to get to this. I have a suspicion they put some kind of a high frequency sound in the theme that we can’t hear. If I knew anything about the electronics, I’d run the theme through a spectrum analyzer. I doubt it’s from any of the sounds we can hear. They have different versions of the theme for the various shows and the dogs are reacting to all of them. Probably a prankster music director.

Tom: That makes sense from the way the dogs are reacting (even the ones that don’t “sing”) and that it only seems to happen with this theme. I thought the TV spectrum was compressed but maybe that’s just for volume and they don’t care about frequencies. It would be funny if some goofball on the inside was exploiting that.

O: Also gotta remember that the TV spectrum recently jumped to a new band, which might be the explanation, if all those vids are from the last 11 months or so.

This is a hilarious piece of art. Brilliant.

- Eric Francis — 1/14/10 @ 6:26 pm

tom, I wouldn’t be surprised, sounds like an excellent way to get the owners attention.
The theme sets up the dog alarm to alert the owner to watch the show… some other example that is totally unrelated except for the infrasound usage:

I used to play clarinet when I was little and my dog always ran into the room and started howling along when I was playing, I think dogs are reacting to the clarinet, or whatever woodwind instrument plays in the theme.

Any time you have a siren blaring (i.e. ambulances, fire trucks and police cars) you will have dogs howling. There are higher sound frequencies in all of those that hurts dogs’ ears. The L&O theme has some of the same elements in it, like a musically played siren tone, that gets peoples’ attention and, as posted by someone earlier, tones that hurt dogs ears. Even knowing that, it never dawned on me until this post that dogs would be affected by the theme (I don’t have a dog). Pretty cool!

I know I’m late to the discussion, but thought I’d add my suggestion as to “Why do dogs bark at Law & Order theme music.”

I think it’s a conditioned response. In case you hadn’t noticed, the closing credits include “Wolf Productions logo” and a howl. Yes, a Pavlovian response. All the stuff about pack/instinctive behavior still holds true, and the music is the key, but the reason, as best I can guess, is they’re anticipating the howling at the end.

- Jim — 2/28/10 @ 6:41 pm

I think that that dogs are howling in response to the howling that is done at the very end of the program. There is a dog that howls. I believe that dogs are capable of anticipating the howl at the end of that program and howl at the anticipation of that howl.
