RHIZOME.ORG NET ART COMMISSIONS

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Deadline for proposals: February 15, 2002

Rhizome.org is pleased to announce the launch of its first net art
commissioning program. With support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for
the Visual Arts and The Jerome Foundation, Rhizome.org will commission
three new net art projects (works of art that are made to be experienced
online).

The fee for each commission will be $5,000.

Rhizome.org is an online platform for the global new media art
community. We are committed to supporting the creation, presentation,
discussion and preservation of art that engages new technologies in
significant ways. We emphasize innovation and inclusiveness in all of
our programs and activities.

Artists are invited to submit proposals in one of two tracks:
alt.interface or Tactical Response.

Track 1: alt.interface

alt.interface is an ongoing series of interface artworks that overlay
Rhizome.org's online databases of text and art. These interfaces provide
alternative ways to navigate and/or access the database and its content.
Three alt.interface projects have been completed to date: StarryNight,
Spiral and Every Image. For more information about these alt.interface
projects, and to access them, please go to http://rhizome.org/interface.

For this track of the commissioning program, artists are asked to
propose new alt.interface projects that would function to visualize and
allow access to the data in the Rhizome TextBase and/or ArtBase. These
alt.interface projects will be listed and linked-to on the main
alt.interface page and will be included in the Rhizome ArtBase.

Before submitting alt.interface proposals, artists are encouraged to
consult our "Notes on Indexing" page at
http://rhizome.org/artbase/2.php3 which offers a good description of the
Rhizome databasing and indexing process. All of Rhizome's indexing
information for both text and art objects is contained in an SQL
database. You should plan your interface accordingly. Here is a
description of how our database is set up. If you have further technical
questions please contact Alex Galloway at alex AT rhizome.org.

Although we will provide some assistance with final integration into the
Rhizome.org web site, artists are expected to develop alt.interface
projects independently and without significant technical assistance from
Rhizome.org.

Track 2: Tactical Response

Net art and tactical media have shared similar histories and
aspirations. For the Tactical Response track we solicit projects that
address the present political situation around the globe, particularly
events relating to the terrorist attacks of September 11. We encourage
artists to address the tactical dimension of specific aesthetic or
technological concerns. Tactical Response projects will be listed on the
main Rhizome Commission page and included in the Rhizome ArtBase.

Although we will provide some assistance with final integration into the
Rhizome.org web site, artists are expected to develop Tactical Response
projects independently and without significant technical assistance from
Rhizome.org.

+ How to Submit a Proposal +

Proposals for a Rhizome.org Net Art Commission are accepted via an
online form at http://rhizome.org/commissions. We do not accept
proposals via email, snail mail or other means. Proposals will be
accepted until 5:00pm EST (that's New York time) on Friday, February 15,
2002.

Important: beyond the limited information provided via the online form,
your proposal must take the form of a web site that includes the
following key elements:

+ Project description (500 words maximum) that discusses your project's
core concept, how you will realize your project and your project's
feasibility. If you plan to work with assistants, consultants or
collaborators, their roles and (if possible) names should be included.

+ You are encouraged, but not required, to include a production timeline
and a project budget, which should include your own fee. If you have
other funding sources for your project, please indicate this in your
budget.

+ Your resume or Curriculum Vitae. For collaborative groups, provide
either a collective CV or the CV's of all participants.

+ Up to 10 work samples. Note: more is not necessarily better. You
should include only work samples that are relevant to your proposal. If
you proposal has nothing to do with photography, don't include images
from your photography portfolio. Please provide contextualizing
information (title, date, medium, perhaps a brief description) to help
the jury understand what they are looking at. The work sample can take
any form, as long as it is accessible via the web.

When designing your web-based proposal, please note that the jury will
have limited time, so try to make your site clear and concise.

When your web-based proposal is complete, fill out our online form at
http://rhizome.org/commissions. The form requires the following
information:

+ Name of artist or collaborative group
+ Email address
+ Place of residence (city, state/province, country)
+ Brief description of project (50 words maximum)
+ URL of web-based proposal

+ Jury +

Proposals will be reviewed by a jury consisting of Steve Dietz of The
Walker Art Center, Alex Galloway of Rhizome.org, Ken Goldberg of U.C.
Berkeley, Christiane Paul of The Whitney Museum of American Art, and
Mark Tribe of Rhizome.org.

The jury will select three winners and two alternates. Winners will be
contacted on or after March 15, 2002. Each winner will be asked to sign
an agreement with Rhizome.org governing the terms of the commission.

+ Winners +

Winners will be announced on March 29, 2002. Commissioned projects must
be completed by October 1, 2002.

FREE BIENNIAL TO BE HELD IN NEW YORK DURING APRIL, 2002

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, January 23, 2002

NEW YORK. This spring New York will host a different kind of art
biennial, The Free Biennial.

The Free Biennial is an exhibition of free art in public spaces, open to
any artist who wishes to participate. It will be held in New York during
the month of April, 2002 (April 2 - April 30, 2002).

Functioning both as an exhibition, and as a situational artwork, The
Free Biennial is a project of artist Sal Randolph who says: "It's an
experiment in presenting a show which is completely democratic and
unedited. There's always an element of the unpredictable when you open
the doors."

In an increasingly crowded field of international art expositions, the
Free Biennial offers a new artistic situation, both for the viewer and
the participating artist. For the artist, the Free Biennial eliminates
the selection process - the curator as gatekeeper or filter. It puts the
question of participation in the hands of the artist, and throws open
the question of value.

For the viewer, the safety of traditional curatorship and spectacle is
removed, allowing an experience which is more direct, raw, and intimate.
The city is transformed into a place of potential where any encounter
could be an artistic one. Armed with a map and the idea that art might
be anywhere, the viewer is invited to step into the shoes of what
Baudelaire and the Situationists called the flâneur, the wanderer, ready
to experience anything.

"It's a new way of looking at public space," says organizer Sal
Randolph. "We've gotten used to seeing public space as either
institutional or commercial. Here is a way for artists and viewers to
operate together as as citizens, engaged with the life of the city. It
holds out possibility for the values of generosity and civility, which
we are so in need of at this time."

"There's plenty of free artwork out there," Randolph adds, "but there's
very little context in which to show it. It's one of the hidden art
movements of our time. This show aims to provide a context which will
make the underground gift economy of art more visible."

Randolph's other recent projects have included "Free Words" in which
2,000 copies of a free book are being infiltrated into bookstores and
libraries worldwide (for more information: http://www.freewords.org).

THE FREE BIENNIAL
http://www.freebiennial.org

A CALL TO ARTISTS

The Free Biennial is an open exhibition of nonmonetary artworks to be
held in greater New York during the month of April, 2002.

Any artist who wishes may participate with such works as ephemeral
installations, guerilla performances, dérives, situations, giveaways,
ambulatory declamations, parties, neo-happenings, apartment shows,
guided experiences, screenings, projections, mail art, downloadable
music, web-based work.

During the exhibition, maps and schedules will be available on the
website to help viewers locate and experience the participating works.
Tours and events will be organized to support the show.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Artists of all kinds are invited to participate in THE FREE BIENNIAL
which will take place in New York during the month of April, 2002.

Any project which is nonmonetary in nature, and which takes place in
public or quasi-public space in the greater New York area any time
during the month of April 2002 is eligible.

Works which are not eligible include those where an admission is charged
or where anything is for sale, as well as works not taking place within
the time and space designated for the show (greater New York City area,
month of April 2002).

Web-based projects are welcome, and will be represented by a description
and a URL link. Mail art projects are also welcome, and will be
represented by a description and a mailing address (the address may be
anywhere in the world as long as participants in New York are invited).

Projects taking place in ordinarily private space (for instance
apartment shows) are eligible if they are open to the public by
appointment or during publicized hours.

Group projects and projects organized by collectives and independent
curators are encouraged.

There is no deadline for participation, but if you wish your information
to be included in publicity materials it must be received by MARCH 1,
2002. For inclusion in the website, information must be received by
MARCH 30, 2002.

Wednesday January 30th
presenting "the Light Surgeons" during the IFFR Sideshow at Off-corso

The Light Surgeons. http://www.thelightsurgeons.co.uk

APB [all points between] live performance

This is a live expressionistic exploded documentary, taking you on a
journey across the social and political landscape that is America. Using
a vast array of old and new technology the light surgeons roots in club
culture become manifest as they mix live digital video, film,
photography and audio tracks, projecting them into one seamless and
dazzling progression of sounds and images that take you or a feature
length trajectory through sound, music, narrative and light.

The initial performance was developed out of a recorded interview with a
street philosopher, Rober Alan Weiser, who the Light Surgeons came
across in Venice Beach LA. His rambling stories and anecdotes became the
initial narrative anchor in this documentary journey and focused the
performance around an exploration of the social and political state of
America.

Spoken word is interwoven with soundtracks and dj sets, as film clips
and slides are displayed and manipulated live, providing visual
illustrations and counterpoints to the collage images. This means each
performance produces different re mixes and cuts' of the film, sometimes
radically different as various visual and musical improvised elements
are inserted.
